1: Thursday, August 7 Ham Radio “Blitz
Classes.” These are all day classes, with an evening exam session.
Classes are designed for those wanting to get started in ham radio—this is the
Technician Class, and for those wanting to advance to the next step—the General
Class. See the article at the end of this Retreat Calendar that outlines Blitz
Class specifics. Day
2: Friday, August 8 Friday morning will
feature the traditional Field Trip. The Field Trip is designed for all those
attending the Retreat, hams, pilots and families. We are tentatively planning
to travel, caravan-style, while keeping in touch, car to car via 2-meter
amateur radio. Our planned destination will be the Great Blue Heron Nature
Reserve (www.chilliwackblueheron.com) located on the Vedder Canal near
Chilliwack, BC. The Reserve is a 325 acre site located on the undyked
floodplain of the Vedder River. The site is home to over 200 Great Blue Heron
nests and a wide variety of wildlife and vegetation including the following
species: Painted Turtle, Bald Eagle, and Salish Sucker. The site includes:
o
2,400 square foot Rotary Interpretive Center
o
Observation tower
o
Bird blinds
o
Fish spawning channels
o
Walking trails
o
Wheel-chair accessible There are picnic tables
spread around the Reserve and you can order a take-along sack lunch from the
Camp Hope cafeteria to take with you and enjoy in this beautiful spot of nature
along the Vedder Canal. Following the lunch, we will caravan back to Camp Hope. On Friday afternoon a
variety of seminars are planned. Topic areas to be covered will include ham
radio, aviation, and special women's (men can sneak in if they wish)/family
seminars. Ham Radio seminars will
include; Building Direction Finding Antennas by Timo Wilson, N7TRU and Sharon
Wilson, KE7COZ; and Ham Radio Instruction 101 is being explored as a possible
topic along with several other seminar ideas. Aviation Seminars will
include: A special report on the latest in aviation, “Light Sport Aircraft,” by
Dave Hensel and a report on “Adventures in Aviation,” by Jim Brackett who will
report on his experiences flying for the United States Postal Service, flying
freight, charter work and air ambulance. Other aviation discussion sessions
will also be included in the Aviation Seminar. And, in the ladies/family
segment of the seminar program on Friday afternoon we will have several guest
presenters. Jim and Neva Brackett (see bio. article in this newsletter), who
once operated the Five Loaves Deli and Bakery in Seattle, and now live in Rice,
Washington near Colville, will present seminars based on their experiences.
Neva will focus on cooking. She is the author of several vegetarian cookbooks
and the seminar presentations should be a real treat. Alice Kirkman, another
guest presenter, will be doing a class on dry flower arranging. Stay tuned,
other possible presentations are still in the works. Friday evening vespers
will begin with a special musical presentation by the NAARA Orchestra and our
vespers speaker will be Jim Brackett. Day
3: Sabbath, August 9 Our Sabbath's at the Camp
Hope NAARA Retreat are always special. The camp atmosphere, in the center of
some of God's most beautiful creation, certainly provides an enhanced worship
experience. Activities begin with the "Early-Bird" Sabbath School
Lesson study. The discussion leaders this year will be Edith Litvin, KA7MIF and
Dave Hensel, K3NO. The lesson period is from 7:00-7:45 AM. Breakfast follows
from 8:00-8:30 AM and then Sabbath School, with a mission’s emphasis, that
begins at 9:30 AM. The mission focus this year will be provided by Sid Kettner,
VE7LLU. Also, for the children we always have a special nature Sabbath
School directed by Sharon Wilson, KE7COZ. We are especially happy
to have Jim and Neva Brackett with us this year. Jim will be our special
speaker for the church service. Jim has worked as a pastor/evangelist and
departmental leader for 30 years. He retired from the Nevada-Utah Conference as
Ministerial Director in August of 2006. Following the church service we always
take time for the group picture and then lunch will be served in the cafeteria
at 1:00 PM. For Sabbath afternoon we
have no scheduled programming. Brochures will be provided that have suggestions
for do-it-yourself activities. You (and friends) can take a nature hike, walk
through the old Othello railroad tunnels and watch salmon trying to work their
way up-river, do the Hope Art Walk, visit with friends or just do a plain bit
of R & R. Supper is at 5:30 PM followed by more music courtesy of the NAARA
Orchestra and then our vespers program provided by Clarence Colp, VE7DMN,
a pastor from Kamloops, BC. The traditional NAARA Business Meeting is scheduled
for 9:00 PM and then, for those of you that are young and vigorous, we'll have
a good old Sing-Along session led by Dwight Johnson, VE7ELA. Dwight is from
Little Fort, located in north-central BC, another part of God’s special
beauty-in-nature country. Day
4, Sunday, August 10 Sunday is our final
day—the Retreat ends just before noon. Attendees have the option of ordering a
sack-lunch to take along with them for the drive home. Breakfast will be served
at 8:00 AM and the ham radio hidden transmitter hunt will begin at 9:15 (meet
in the Lodge Lobby). This year's hunt has two elements—a radio hunt and a GPS
hunt. Bring your 2 meter direction finding gear and those into GPS fun; bring
your portable GPS gear. Prizes will be awarded to the successful
"hunters" following the hunt. There may be other planned activities
for Sunday morning as well so check the Program pamphlet that you receive at
registration. Some
added thoughts about Camp Hope Hope, BC is just a bit
over an hour across the US/Canada border if you cross at Sumas, WA. The camp
facilities are outstanding and the camp setting is beautiful. You can stay in
the motel-style rooms in the lodge, bring your RV, tent-camp or sleep under the
stars if you wish. You can provide your own meals (there are no guest cooking
facilities), do corn flakes for breakfast and eat the rest of the meals at the
cafeteria or eat all your meals at the cafeteria (pick and choose as you wish).
The cafeteria cooks do have a terrific reputation for producing outstanding
Canadian Cuisine. We look forward to great
fun for all at the NAARA Camp Hope Retreat 2008. Hope to see you there (bring
some friends too). For
Those Wishing to Enroll in one of the Blitz Classes Thursday is the day for the ham
radio "Blitz Classes." We tried this last year and it was very
successful. We offered the one-day Technician Class course and of eight
enrollees, seven passed the FCC examination that evening. This year we will offer
both the Technician and General classes. Keith Carlin, N7ACW, will teach the
Technician class and Al Liske, KA7Z / VA7XZ, will teach the General class. Instruction
will begin at 8:00 AM. There will be short breaks for meals (breakfast
and lunch—bring your own snacks or whatever), supper will be available in
the cafeteria plus there will be brief time-out breaks during the day. The
exam session will begin in the evening at 8:00 PM. It is recommended that students
purchase a textbook some time prior to class for some good pre-study. For the
Technician class, buy "Technician Class Amateur Radio Element 2 FCC
License Preparation" by Gordon West. Cost: $18.95 plus $7.00 shipping. For
the General Class buy "General Class Amateur Radio Element 3 FCC License
Preparation" by Gordon West. Cost: $20.95 plus $7.00 shipping. Phone your
order to Ham Radio Outlet in Tigard, OR @ 503-598-0555 or 800-854-6046. Save
shipping charges by pickup it up in Tigard if you live in the Portland area.
Also a note for our Canadian
friends: At this point we are not teaching the Canadian ham classes. However,
if you wish to get a US license, you can do so as long as you have a useable US
mailing address. (Note from Editor Al Liske—I have both US and Canadian
licenses, KA7Z and VA7XZ. I am basically familiar with Canadian licensing
requirements). Blitz Class To-Do List
Decide which class you wish to
take. If you have no license now, you must take, and pass, the Technician Class
first—if you do this, you can try the General Class test immediately at no
additional exam charge.
o
Purchase your
text books as soon as possible. Study hard. Especially focus on the “Getting
Ready for the Exam” section of the textbook. This will prepare you for the
one-day final class study at Camp Hope.
